Most lower end apps and navigation software only deal in "Tracks". However tracks are just breadcrumbs of where you have been. Google earth will allow to to essentially draw a Track.
In LEADNAV we record Tracks/breadcrumbs (Blue lines) and build Routes (Red Lines) Tracks can also be converted to Routes that can be then edited with Audible Waypoints and Run as a navigational path.
With a military background..any serious route building we need to do is typically done on terrain analyst software. Some of these software packages ranging from $10k to $30k a year for one license.
However the combo of Google earth for terrain route building and LEADNAV is a solid package the majority of the time.
