Location tracking a spot in leadnav....

Hey Damian, how about adding a way to add a spot tracker in location sharing? Spot has a very simple API (Actually just an XML page) that can be accessed to show location info. A spot's serivce it $100 a year.

From a programing side, this would be a very easy thing to add into leadnav.

This would allow the smaller teams to have a spot on their race vehicle or non-primary chase vehicles, and just purchase 1 or 2 irridum go units for their main chase vehicles to track them.

Thanks for the suggestion, John! Do you own a spot tracker?

Yes, actually everyone in my team has one. For the price you can't go wrong.

This seems like a great idea. The iridiumGo solution for tracking “off grid” teams seems very expensive for smaller teams.

The problem with the SPOT compared to the GO and our LN-Iridium service is the SPOT offers no Down link...

The Spot only pings out your position and has no back and fourth communication between users in the field.

LEADNAV provides Real time location tracking of all units "IN THE FIELD" without any cellular connectivity... worldwide. As well as unlimited messaging to and from anyone worldwide... and 150 minutes of Voice Sat calls.

The Spot is great if people back home want to track you but no use for units operating in the field. For instance if you get hurt we can tell where you are while at home but have no way to find you or communicate with you once we arrive in the area. Then you have the problem as in this last Baja 1000 where everyone is calling the Weatherman to ask where so and so is....tying up the net while they scramble to try and coordinate support by trying to relay positions over the radio..

Yes this might be a good option and its what the majority of tracking companies offer... but HUGE difference... hence the cost.

The Spot is also not dependable as shown in the past few events and races...

If the SPOT is all you need we recommend you continue to use it while people back home monitor you via their webpage. As it will not benefit those with LEADNAV out in the field. Then they would have to pass location via radio to those in the field using LEADNAV.

Or you can run the LN-Iridiums and communicate and see everyone LIVE in the field!

    OR

You can tell SCORE or the other race organizers to keep running the SPOTs on the race cars...and have them share their tracking data to us so every Chase vehicle, aircraft and other on the ground units can see you all Live in LEADNAV with their LN-Iridiums...saving you the cost...while offering you a HUGE upgrade in peace of mind that rescue units could actually find you instantly.

At any rate the two capabilities could be blended together but they are completely different... hence the cost.
